Cappadocia is renowned for its extraordinary lands Cappadocia is renowned for its extraordinary landscape of fairy chimneys and vast rock formations. This geological wonder is matched by a remarkable human history. For centuries, people have ingeniously used the region’s soft volcanic rock (tuff), formed from ancient volcanic ash, to carve out homes, churches, and entire underground cities. The earliest of these caves date back to around the 4th century AD, when early Christians, fleeing Roman persecution, sought refuge in Cappadocia’s valleys. Over time, these rock-hewn sanctuaries evolved into vast subterranean complexes of underground cities which provided both comfort and defense, allowing entire communities to survive and thrive beneath the surface throughout history.

This image was captured at the Khongor Sand Dunes This image was captured at the Khongor Sand Dunes in the Gobi Desert during the recently concluded Mongolia Photo Workshop. Bactrian camels have played a vital role in the lives of steppe nomads since their domestication around 2500 BC. These remarkable animals are used primarily for transportation, capable of carrying loads between 170 to 250 kilograms (375 to 550 pounds) and traveling up to 47 kilometers (30 miles) a day - often for as many as 30 consecutive days without drinking water. Their contributions go far beyond transport. Their coarse outer hair is used to make strong ropes that secure traditional Ger camps, while their fine wool is spun into garments and socks - an adult male can produce up to 18 kilograms (40 pounds) of wool annually. Bactrian camels also provide milk and meat, making them indispensable to the survival and culture of Mongolia’s nomadic communities.
