Story behind the lens: Magical lofoten
I’ve visited this location in Lofoten countless times over the past 10 years, yet I had never captured a serious image here — until today. With the mountain partially veiled in fog, the usually unremarkable front peak emerged distinctly, resembling the Matterhorn.
Fog is a magical element in landscape photography. Moments like this, where weather conditions create such a rare and unique scene, are truly once-in-a-lifetime.
The composition is straightforward yet visually striking. The perfect symmetry between the mountain and harbor creates a sense of harmony, while positioning the mountain at the center of the frame enhances the image’s stability and balance.
Geometrically, the scene features two distinct triangles formed by the mountain and its reflection.
Additionally, the boats, arranged from near to far, create a strong converging line that draws the eye into the image. Subtle geometric elements are woven throughout, adding depth and structure to the composition.
This is a 5-second exposure — long enough to smooth out subtle ripples in the calm water, yet short enough to preserve the sharpness of the gently rocking boats.
I rarely take photos while leading a workshop. But if you see me pull out my camera and shout for you to take the shot — you’d better do it!
